The Gateway to Austin committee is thankful for the support of the City of Austin, the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, and The Hormel Foundation in the work to make Austin a more attractive and inviting place to visit.

Past accomplishments

  • Creation of the Austin Visual Quality Manual, in collaboration with the City of Austin and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.  This manual is on file with MNDOT and will serve as a guideline for all updates or replacements to bridges and their surroundings along the I-90 corridor.
  • Helped design and secure purchase of new directional signage that are placed at 18 strategic locations throughout Austin. Visitors are now able to easily identify important destinations in town and know how to get to them.

Current objectives

  • Create new "Welcome to Austin" signs to be placed at the ends of the I-90 corridor and Highway 218.
  • Work with the City of Austin and the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau to construct a new Visitors Center, which will provide engaging information about the many attractions in Austin and the surrounding area.  The location and programming for this facility are still under consideration.

Future goals

  • Secure funding for bridge enhancements and landscaping in time for the replacement of the seven I-90 bridges, which are scheduled to take place from 2017-2025.
