The Downtown Destination committee loves its work and seeing downtown grow!  They are thankful for the financial support of many organizations that have made downtown projects and events possible, including The Hormel Foundation, the City of Austin, Hormel Foods, The Hormel Historic Home, Piggy Blues BBQ, Everything Hobby, Accentra Credit Union, US Bank, Wells Fargo, and Farmers and Merchants State Bank.

Past accomplishments

  • Supported the renovation of the old bank building on Main and 2nd to make way for the new Austin ArtWorks Center.
  • Supported and facilitated the relocation of the new SPAM Museum to downtown. Tens of thousands of visitors will now flow right through the heart of Austin and increase traffic at our restaurants and retail establishments.
  • Created two new annual events downtown - Summer Kickoff and Fall Fest - which feature free music and entertainment for the whole family. These events regularly draw hundreds of spectators to downtown Austin.
  • Supported the work of the Austin Main Street Project on exterior building renovations.  Leftover funds were utilized to operate a rent reimbursement program in 2015-16, which supported new businesses downtown: Everything Hobby, and Life Safety 4-U.

Current objectives

  • Continue to offer a variety of fun activities and music at the Summer Kickoff and Fall Fest.
  • Collaborate with the Downtown Association and Chamber of Commerce to enhance other downtown events, including Crazy Days and Christmas in the City.
  • Collaborate to help fill empty storefronts, encourage Downtown housing development, and generally grow the local economy.

Future goals

  • Have all open storefronts on Main St. and the surrounding areas filled with successful businesses, and build on previous incentives and projects to make it happen.
  • Continue to promote downtown Austin as a fun place to shop, eat, and live.
