What is the purpose of Vision 2020?

To engage Austin citizens in a community visioning process – an open, all-inclusive discussion to develop a variety of ideas to improve Austin.

What does that mean?

The Vision 2020 process is about the community and what it will look like in 2020. We are committed to keeping our community vibrant and growing – an attractive place to work, raise a family or start a business.

What is the mission of Vision 2020?

To inspire our community to collectively create a vision for a greater Austin through a city project process where all ideas are welcome and the best are brought to life.

Why ten ideas?

Ten ideas are feasible for the size of our community and will make a difference.

What type of ideas are you looking for?

We’re looking for ideas that make Austin a more attractive place to live, to work, to start a business, to retire, to shop, worship or visit. It can be related to infrastructure, schools, parks, retail – anything. If you think it will make Austin better we want to hear it.

Why the year 2020?

We are looking for BIG ideas that take time to find, develop and make happen!

What types of ideas will the project be taking on?

Vision 2020 is focused on a single goal – find ten great ideas that the community supports and will keep Austin a great place to live and work.

Where will the funding for projects come from?

The process of developing ideas will also help us identify funding sources.

How can people get involved?

Community members are invited to be part of the process at any level. Whether that be attending meetings, submitting ideas, hosting an idea gathering, serving on the idea selection committee, etc.

What is the Big Night of Ideas?

The Big Night of Ideas is an event being held Sept. 28th at the Holiday Inn in Austin at 5:30pm where community members are invited to come, have supper, and work with other community members to brainstorm and submit ideas to make Austin a better community.

What is the timetable?

The Vision 2020 process kicks off August 18th. Ideas can be submitted August 18th – October 14th. The Big Night of Ideas is Sept. 28th. Community members will be asked to vote on their favorites ideas until December 23rd. The Idea Selection Committee will narrow to the top 30 and then finally the top 10. The ten selected projects will be announced in March 2012.
